COMMISSION OH HUMAN RIGHTS Thirty-sixth session Agenda item 10 (a)
QUESTION OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF ALL PERSONS SUBJECTED TO ANY FORM of DETENTION OR   IMPRISONENT,   IK PARTICULAR:
(a)    TORTURE AND OTHER CRUEL,  INHUMAN OR DEGRADING TREATMENT OR PUNISHMENT

The  Commission  on Human  Rights,
Having in mind General Assembly resolution 32/62 of 8 December 1977 by which the Commission was requested to draw up a draft convention or. torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,  and resolution 1979/35 of 10 Hay 1979 by which the Economic and Social Council authorized an open-ended working group of the Commission on Human Rights to meet for a period of one week prior to the thirty-sixth session of the Commission to complete the work on 0  draft convention on torture and other cruel,  inhuman or degrading  treatment or punishment,
Recalling   that such a draft convention has been discussed  in a working group prior to and during the thirty-sixth cession of the Commission but  that  it was not found possible  to complete the work during that session,
Noting with satisfaction the progress made by the open-ended working group on the draft convention during  the   thirty-sixth session,
Desiring  to make arrangements to expedite  the work on the draft convention with c view to its early adoption-,
1.      Recognizes  that  it  is advisable to continue  the work on the  draft convention in a working group which should meet before  the  thirty-seventh session of the Commission,
2.    Decides   to  accord  high  priority   to   the   consideration of   this   question  at   its thirty-seventh  session,
3.    Recommends   that   the Economic   and  Social   Council   should  adopt   the   following resolution:
      In accordance with rule 69.  paragraph 5.   of the  rules of procedure of the functional commissions of  the Economic and Social  Council.

Recalling General Assembly resolution 32/62 of 3 December 1977 by which the Commission on Hunan Rights was requested to draw up a draft convention on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, or punishment and resolution 1979/35 of 10 Hay 1979 by Which the Economic and Social Council authorized an open-ended working group of the Commission on Hunan Rights to meet for a period of one tree!: prior to the thirty-sxthi session of the Commission to complete the work on a draft convention on torture and other     fuel,  inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,
conspiring  that it was not found possible to complete the work on the convention during the thirty-sixth session of the Commission,
Taking note of Commission on Human Rights resolution - (XXXVI),
1-      Authorizes a meeting of an open-ended working group for a period of one week prior to the   thirty-seventh session of the Commission on Human Rights to complete the work on a draft convention against torture,
2.      Requests the Secretary-General  to transmit to the Commission on Human Rights a; its thirty-seventh session all relevant materials relating to the draft convention.
