CONSIDERATION OF PR0F0SA's CONCERNING A NEW INSTRUMENT OR INSTRUMENTS OF INTERNATIONAL LAW TO ELIMINATE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN

The Commission on the Status of Women,
Having considered item 4 of its agenda entitled "Consideration of proposals concerning a new Instrument or Instruments of International Law to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women",
Concerned at the continuing discrimination against women,
Desiring to give effect to the principles set out in the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against women and to ensure the speedy adoption of the necessary practical measures for that purpose,
Recalling its resolution 5 (XXIV) establishing a Working Group on the preparation 01* a new draft Instrument or Instruments of International Law to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women,
Recognising the value of the work performed by the Working Group,
Noting that the Working Group reached agreement on only 6 of the 24 articles in it3 report,
1. Expresses its thanks to the Working Group for producing in its report alternative draft articles for a Convention;
2. Invite3 the Secretary-General
(a) To call on Member States of the United nations, specialized agencies and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the United Nations, to transmit their comments on the alternative draft articles; and

(b) To prepare a working paper taking into account the replies of Governments, specialized agencies end non-governmental organizations;
3. Requests Member States, bearing in mind that 1975 has been designated International Women's Year, to examine the report of the Working Group as a. question of priority;
4. Resolves to place on the agenda of its twenty-sixth session an item entitled "Consideration of a draft Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women" end, in order to facilitate this work, decides to establish a Working Group composed of 16 Members of the Commission appointed with due regard to the principle of equitable geographical distribution which is to meet five days before the beginning of the Commission's twenty-sixth session and continue the work on the preparation of a draft Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against women in the light of Governments' and specialized agencies' replies and of the Secretary-General's report.
